Recently, Howard Webb–the center official for the World Cup’s final match– reflected that he should have given Nigel de Jong a red card for basically karate kicking Spain’s Xabi Alonso in the chest midway through the first half. How do you feel about this judgment? Is it fair for Webb to re-judge his call? And, does this give any credit to the incorporation of video replay for refs?

I felt for Webb from the moment that game started. The Dutch were set on playing brutal soccer, and the Spanish eventually sunk a level (diving, shameless theatrics) in order to cope. It seemed a red card, which would definitely help swing the outcome, was only a matter of time. It was just surprising it happened later rather than sooner. Mainly what Webb’s comments did, though, was remind me of what a crappy final that was.
